JennAir cooktop repair: what to know
JennAir popularized the downdraft cooktop, which pulls smoke and steam down through a vent at the cooktop and out through ducting below. A downdraft that stops pulling can be a blower motor fault, a greasy filter, a backdraft damper stuck shut or a crushed duct, so the whole path gets checked, not just the fan. JennAir also makes gas and induction cooktops without downdraft, where spark ignition and induction electronics are the usual failure points.
Worth knowing about JennAir: JennAir is the luxury brand in Whirlpool's family, so many mechanical parts are shared with KitchenAid and Whirlpool while control boards and panels are JennAir's own. Also, JennAir made its name with downdraft cooktops, and when the downdraft stops pulling smoke, the culprit is usually the blower or the duct run, not the cooktop.

How we diagnose a JennAir cooktop
Whatever the brand, on a cooktop we check igniters and burner ports on gas; elements, switches and the control board on electric and induction — a gas burner that won't light or flames unevenly almost always has a clogged port or a bad igniter, not a bad valve.
One cooktop symptom that's easy to misread is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.
Built-in JennAir equipment: what the visit involves
Most JennAir equipment is built into cabinetry or anchored in place, so the visit starts with working out how to reach it. We allow a longer appointment and protect floors, cabinet faces and countertops before anything moves.
It changes the economics as well. Replacing a fitted JennAir cooktop usually means cabinet or countertop work on top of the new appliance, so a failure that would retire a freestanding unit is usually still a repair here.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the underside of the cooktop or the burner box, often visible from the cabinet below. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which JennAir platform you have and which parts to bring.
On gas, make sure each burner cap is seated and the ports are clean and dry. On electric, note whether one element or all of them are out. On induction and touch controls, write down any error code.

Clean or replace the grease filter first, since a packed filter chokes airflow. Then check that the blower runs at each speed and that the outside damper opens. Crushed or disconnected ducting under the cabinet can leave the fan running but pulling weakly.
Yes. The blower, filter, vent-lift mechanism and controls are separate parts from the burners or elements. In some installations the blower is mounted remotely in the cabinet or along the duct, which changes how it's reached.
The vent is raised by a small motor and gear track, and something dropped into the slot, a failed motor or a control fault can stop it. Don't force it up by hand, which can strip the gears. With the cooktop cool and off, check the slot for debris first.
Usually, if only one burner or zone is affected and there's no gas smell, cracked glass or electrical fault. A cracked top or a gas smell means stop using it altogether.
