KitchenAid cooktop repair: what to know
KitchenAid makes gas, radiant electric, induction and downdraft cooktops. Induction units rely on power boards and a cooling fan under the glass; if the space below is packed tight or the vents are blocked, the unit can overheat and shut zones down. Gas models use a spark module and knob switches like other Whirlpool-family cooktops, but KitchenAid grates, caps and burner heads are specific to each model. Downdraft versions add a pop-up vent and blower to the list.
Worth knowing about KitchenAid: KitchenAid is built on Whirlpool mechanicals with its own finishes and control electronics, so pumps and motors often cross over while boards and panels are KitchenAid-only. Also, KitchenAid wall ovens and warming drawers are set into cabinetry, so taking one out is worked out before the visit and the argument for repairing rather than replacing gets stronger.

How we diagnose a KitchenAid cooktop
Whatever the brand, on a cooktop we check igniters and burner ports on gas; elements, switches and the control board on electric and induction — a gas burner that won't light or flames unevenly almost always has a clogged port or a bad igniter, not a bad valve.
One cooktop symptom that's easy to misread is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.
Repairing a KitchenAid cooktop instead of replacing it
KitchenAid builds for a long working life and keeps parts available for years. When one component fails on a KitchenAid cooktop that's ten or fifteen years old, the rest of the machine often has plenty of life left, which isn't always true of an entry-level appliance at that age.
KitchenAid parts cost more and are more often special-order, so some repairs need a second visit. You'll know the wait before you agree to the repair, and the return visit is booked before we leave.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the underside of the cooktop or the burner box, often visible from the cabinet below. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which KitchenAid platform you have and which parts to bring.
On gas, make sure each burner cap is seated and the ports are clean and dry. On electric, note whether one element or all of them are out. On induction and touch controls, write down any error code.

Induction electronics cut power when they get too hot. Check that the cooling vents underneath aren't blocked by items in a drawer or cabinet below, and that the pan base is flat. Repeated shutdowns with good airflow point to the cooling fan or a board fault.
The spark module and some valves are often shared, but burner heads, caps and grates are usually model-specific. Match those by the cooktop's model number, since a cap that doesn't sit right causes poor ignition and an uneven flame.
The pop-up vent is raised by a small motor and track. Debris in the slot, a failed motor or a control fault can stop it. Check the slot for anything dropped into it, and don't force the vent up by hand, which can damage the drive.
Igniters, switches and elements are often available for a first-visit repair. Glass tops and induction boards usually need ordering.
