Smeg cooktop repair: what to know
Smeg makes gas, induction and ceramic cooktops, and several gas models pair a wok burner with standard burners. On gas tops, burner caps and spark electrodes have to sit exactly right, and Smeg's caps are model-specific, so a mismatched or cracked cap can stop a burner lighting properly. Induction tops rely on a cooling fan and power electronics under the glass, and they need enough ventilation in the cabinet below to stay within temperature.
Worth knowing about Smeg: Smeg is best known for its 1950s-style refrigerators but also makes built-in ovens, cooktops and dishwashers on mainstream European engineering. Also, the painted panels and chrome handles are much of what a Smeg owner paid for, so we handle them carefully.

How we diagnose a Smeg cooktop
Whatever the brand, on a cooktop we check igniters and burner ports on gas; elements, switches and the control board on electric and induction — a gas burner that won't light or flames unevenly almost always has a clogged port or a bad igniter, not a bad valve.
One cooktop problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.
Repairing a Smeg cooktop instead of replacing it
Smeg builds for a long working life and keeps parts available for years. When one component fails on a Smeg cooktop that's ten or fifteen years old, the rest of the machine often has plenty of life left, which isn't always true of an entry-level appliance at that age.
Smeg parts cost more and are more often special-order, so some repairs need a second visit. You'll know the wait before you agree to the repair, and the return visit is booked before we leave.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the underside of the cooktop or the burner box, often visible from the cabinet below. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Smeg platform you have and which parts to bring.
On gas, make sure each burner cap is seated and the ports are clean and dry. On electric, note whether one element or all of them are out. On induction and touch controls, write down any error code.

Many Smeg gas cooktops have a flame failure device: a thermocouple that holds the gas valve open only while the flame heats it. Hold the knob in for several seconds after lighting. If the flame still drops out, the thermocouple tip may be dirty, out of position or failed.
Induction electronics shut down to protect themselves when they overheat. Check that the cabinet below has the ventilation gap the installation manual calls for and that the cooling fan runs. A fan that has stopped is a repairable part.
Many can, but the burner injectors and the low-flame setting on each valve must be converted for LP gas. A cooktop running on the wrong jets burns with a poor flame and can produce carbon monoxide. Check the gas type on the rating plate under the cooktop.
