Amana cooktop repair: what to know
Amana cooktops are basic electric coil and smooth-top models, plus gas cooktops with sealed burners. Coil tops are the simplest to repair: each coil plugs into a receptacle and is controlled by an infinite switch, and all three are separate parts. Smooth-top models add radiant elements under the glass, each with a limiter that protects the glass from overheating. On gas models, one spark module lights every burner.
Worth knowing about Amana: Amana models are Whirlpool engineering with plainer controls, so they carry fewer electronics that can fail and share many parts with Whirlpool. Also, because a new Amana is inexpensive, the math favors replacement sooner than on higher-end brands, and we'll tell you when you've reached that point.

How we diagnose an Amana cooktop
Whatever the brand, on a cooktop we check igniters and burner ports on gas; elements, switches and the control board on electric and induction — a gas burner that won't light or flames unevenly almost always has a clogged port or a bad igniter, not a bad valve.
One cooktop problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.
When an Amana cooktop is worth fixing
Amana keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Amana doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as an induction power board or a cracked glass top, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.

The infinite switch controls a coil by switching it on and off at different rates. When the switch fails, the coil can stay fully on, or stay off at lower settings. Replacing that switch usually fixes it.
Confirm the cooktop has power, since the spark module needs electricity; a tripped breaker or GFCI can stop it. If power is present and no burner sparks, the spark module is the likely fault. If only one fails, its electrode or wire is more likely.
Most gas cooktops with electronic ignition can be lit carefully with a long match: hold the lit match near the burner ports, then turn the knob to Lite. Check your manual's instructions first. Oven burners with glow-bar igniters can't be lit this way.
The type of cooktop and the part. Igniters, knobs and switches are small parts; radiant elements are moderate; induction power boards and glass tops cost more. The price is quoted once the fault is found.
