Hotpoint cooktop repair: what to know
Hotpoint cooktops are mainly electric, with coil elements or a smooth radiant glass surface, and a simple infinite switch sets each element's heat. A coil element that works only on high, or stays hot after it's switched off, usually has a failed infinite switch. Coil tops plug each element into a receptacle, and a scorched receptacle makes an element cut in and out. On radiant tops, a crack in the glass means stopping use until the top is replaced.
Worth knowing about Hotpoint: in the U.S., Hotpoint is a GE Appliances brand, built on GE's platform with GE parts. Also, Hotpoint keeps its models deliberately basic, with fewer electronics than the GE-badged versions, so there's less to diagnose.

One cooktop problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.
When a Hotpoint cooktop is worth fixing
Hotpoint keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Hotpoint doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as an induction power board or a cracked glass top, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.
Before the visit

On gas, make sure each burner cap is seated and the ports are clean and dry. On electric, note whether one element or all of them are out. On induction and touch controls, write down any error code.

The infinite switch behind the knob cycles the element on and off to set the heat. When its contacts weld or fail, the element runs fully on or not at all. The switch is replaced separately from the element.
The element terminals plug into a receptacle, and a loose fit lets the connection arc and burn. Turn off the breaker and look for blackened terminals. Replace both the element and the receptacle if they're scorched.
No. A crack can let spills reach the elements and wiring, and the glass can break further under heat. Turn off the breaker and have the top replaced before cooking on it again.
A dead zone on an induction top can be the pan, a cooling fan or a power board, and a gas burner that won't light can be a cap or a spark module. Each needs its own test before a part is chosen.
