Tap water in West San Antonio comes mainly from SAWS, which draws on the Edwards Aquifer. SAWS describes its water as very hard — typically 15 to 20 grains per gallon — and that limestone scale builds up on dishwasher heaters, washer inlet screens, refrigerator water valves and ice makers. It is behind a lot of "not cleaning," "slow fill" and "no ice" complaints.

Joint Base San Antonio shapes a lot of daily life in West San Antonio. Families move on permanent change-of-station orders, homes turn over between tenants, and a repair often has three parties: the family using the appliance, the owner who is paying, and sometimes a property manager in between. Moves are hard on appliances. Washers get shifted without their shipping bolts, refrigerators are laid on their sides and run too soon, water lines are kinked when a fridge is pushed back into place. If your home or appliance is recent, check the manufacturer's warranty before paying for any repair — the paperwork is usually in the builder's closing packet or registered online, and the model and serial number are on a label inside the door or on the back.
