AGA Cooktop

AGA cooktop repair: what to know

On a traditional AGA, the cooking surface is two insulated hotplates, a boiling plate and a simmering plate, heated by the same source as the ovens and covered by insulated lids when not in use. Controllable models give each hotplate its own element. AGA also sells separate induction and gas cooktops in some markets. On a traditional model, a hotplate that won't get hot enough is usually part of a whole-cooker temperature issue, not a hotplate fault.

Worth knowing about AGA: a traditional AGA cooker stores heat in a heavy cast-iron body that stays hot all the time, and troubleshooting one has little in common with a conventional oven. Also, on an AGA the parts that need attention are the burner or heating elements, the thermostat, and the door seals and hinges; the cast iron itself doesn't wear.

Common AGA cooktop failures

These are the failure points to check first on an AGA cooktop:

  • Hotplate not heating fully on controllable models
  • Hotplate lids losing insulation or hinge tension
  • Heat source not keeping the cooker hot
  • Thermostat or control failing
  • Gas burner ignition faults on gas-fired models

A list like this points the diagnosis in the right direction, but one symptom can come from parts at very different prices, so the cause is confirmed at your home before you get a quote.

How we diagnose an AGA cooktop

Whatever the brand, on a cooktop we check igniters and burner ports on gas; elements, switches and the control board on electric and induction — a gas burner that won't light or flames unevenly almost always has a clogged port or a bad igniter, not a bad valve.

One cooktop problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.

Built-in AGA equipment: what the visit involves

Most AGA equipment is built into cabinetry or anchored in place, so the visit starts with working out how to reach it. We allow a longer appointment and protect floors, cabinet faces and countertops before anything moves.

It changes the economics as well. Replacing a fitted AGA cooktop usually means cabinet or countertop work on top of the new appliance, so a failure that would retire a freestanding unit is usually still a repair here.

Before the visit

The model and serial number are on the underside of the cooktop or the burner box, often visible from the cabinet below. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which AGA platform you have and which parts to bring.

On gas, make sure each burner cap is seated and the ports are clean and dry. On electric, note whether one element or all of them are out. On induction and touch controls, write down any error code.

In San Antonio, keep in mind the many homes cooking on CPS Energy natural gas, and pro-style cooktops in remodeled kitchens whose high-output burners need their own kind of service.

On traditional models, the hotplates draw heat from the whole cooker. If the ovens are also cooler, the heat source or thermostat is suspected. Leaving lids open for long periods also drains heat.

Lids have insulation and hinges that can wear. Replacement lids and hinge parts are available through AGA. A lid that doesn't close fully lets heat escape.

Yes. It uses similar power electronics, coils and cooling fans. Parts are ordered through AGA by model and serial number.

A dead zone on an induction top can be the pan, a cooling fan or a power board, and a gas burner that won't light can be a cap or a spark module. Each needs its own test before a part is chosen.
