Admiral cooktop repair: what to know
Admiral cooktop repairs are mostly on the surface section of its basic ranges: coil elements on electric models and spark-lit burners on gas models, with no touch electronics. Coil elements plug into receptacles and are controlled by infinite switches, and gas burners are lit by a spark module through switches on the knobs. A coil that wobbles in its receptacle arcs and burns the contacts, so a loose element should be reseated or replaced before the receptacle is damaged.
Worth knowing about Admiral: Admiral appliances sold in the U.S. came from Maytag and later Whirlpool, so the parts inside are Whirlpool-family parts. Also, most Admirals still running are old enough that their mechanical parts are still made but some of their electronics are not, and we check which is which before quoting.

How we diagnose an Admiral cooktop
Whatever the brand, on a cooktop we check igniters and burner ports on gas; elements, switches and the control board on electric and induction — a gas burner that won't light or flames unevenly almost always has a clogged port or a bad igniter, not a bad valve.
One cooktop symptom that's easy to misread is an induction cooktop throwing an error during long, hot cooking, which is often the unit protecting itself from overheating or poor ventilation rather than a failed board.
When an Admiral cooktop is worth fixing
Admiral keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Admiral doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as an induction power board or a cracked glass top, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the underside of the cooktop or the burner box, often visible from the cabinet below. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Admiral platform you have and which parts to bring.
On gas, make sure each burner cap is seated and the ports are clean and dry. On electric, note whether one element or all of them are out. On induction and touch controls, write down any error code.

The coil's terminals aren't making solid contact in the receptacle, so current arcs. Turn the element off and let it cool, then look for pitted or burned terminals. Burned parts should be replaced, since arcing gets worse and can damage the wiring.
Food or cleaner in the burner ports, or a cap that isn't sitting flat, gives a ragged flame. With the burner cool, remove the cap, clear the ports with a straight pin, and dry everything fully. Reseat the cap so it sits level.
Some variation is normal as a coil heats. A coil that glows much brighter in one spot or has a blister is failing and can burn through, so replace it before it shorts.
Igniters, switches and elements are often available for a first-visit repair. Glass tops and induction boards usually need ordering.
