Maytag cooktop repair: what to know
Maytag cooktops come in gas and smooth-top electric versions, with a high-output burner on many gas models and a dual-size element on many electric ones. The electric models use infinite switches or electronic touch controls; gas models use a shared spark module and a switch at each knob. A burner that won't light after a boil-over usually needs drying and cleaning before any part is replaced, because wet electrodes and blocked ports mimic a failure.
Worth knowing about Maytag: Maytag has been part of Whirlpool since 2006, so a Maytag built in the years since shares its internals and parts with Whirlpool models. Also, Maytag machines from before the Whirlpool merger are mechanically solid, but some of their parts are no longer made, so we confirm the part exists before recommending the repair.

What Maytag cooktop repairs usually involve
Parts for Maytag are made in volume and stocked by many suppliers. On a Maytag cooktop, the parts that wear out are mostly inexpensive ones: spark igniters and switches, burner caps and heads, radiant elements and infinite switches.

Dual elements have two circuits switched by a dual infinite switch or the control. If only one ring heats, either the outer coil of the element has opened or the switch contact for it has failed. A continuity test on the element tells which.
Check that the cap is seated flat and the ports aren't blocked, since an uneven flame can fail to hold. Drafts from a ceiling fan or open window can also blow out a low flame. If a clean, seated burner still won't hold a flame, the valve or gas supply needs checking.
Check for a control lock first, often shown by a lock icon. Moisture or a pan resting on the control area can also block the touch sensors. If the panel stays unresponsive once dry and clear, the touch control board is the likely fault.
A dead zone on an induction top can be the pan, a cooling fan or a power board, and a gas burner that won't light can be a cap or a spark module. Each needs its own test before a part is chosen.
