Each Vario column has its own compressor, fans and controls, so a fault stays in that column. Check that its ventilation openings aren't blocked and that the door closes fully against the gasket. If both are fine, the fan, defrost system and sensor in that column need testing.
Most repairs are done with the column in place. Removal is only needed for access to the back, such as some sealed-system work, and it involves the anchoring hardware and the neighboring panels, so it's planned before anything moves.
Not generally. The 400 series is the flagship modular column system and the 200 series is Gaggenau's other built-in line, and they use different components. The rating label inside the column, not the series name, decides which parts fit.

A defrost sensor, fan motor or start relay is a modest part, a control board costs more, and a sealed-system repair (a leak or a compressor) is the largest job because it involves brazing, evacuating and recharging.
