Beyond the filter, the drain pump, wash motor, door latch and water inlet valve are the parts most likely to fail. On very hard water, check the rinse-aid setting before blaming the machine for cloudy glasses.

Many Whirlpool dishwashers report faults by flashing a status light a set number of times, and the pattern matches a fault listed in the technical sheet stored inside the unit. Count the flashes and note whether they repeat. A flash code narrows the problem to a circuit, not a single part.
Clean the filter first, since a packed filter is a common cause. If the dishwasher drains through a disposal, run the disposal and confirm the knockout plug was removed when it was installed. If water still stays, the drain pump or a kinked drain hose is next.
Not if it's leaking onto the floor, smells of burning or trips the breaker. A dishwasher that leaves water behind or cleans poorly won't be harmed by waiting, but clean the filter first, since it's a common cause of both.
