Hotpoint dishwashers are basic built-in models with simple controls and fewer cycles than GE's upper lines. Many use a filter or fine mesh screen that needs regular cleaning, and a neglected one causes gritty dishes and slow draining. Drain pumps, inlet valves and door latches are the typical failure points, and on very hard water the spray arm holes and the heating element collect scale that hurts both washing and drying.
Worth knowing about Hotpoint: in the U.S., Hotpoint is a GE Appliances brand, built on GE's platform with GE parts. Also, Hotpoint keeps its models deliberately basic, with fewer electronics than the GE-badged versions, so there's less to diagnose.

When a Hotpoint dishwasher is worth fixing
Hotpoint keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Hotpoint doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as the main control board or the wash motor, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, visible when the door is open. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Hotpoint platform you have and which parts to bring.
Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub, check that the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't plugged, and top up the rinse aid. If water is left standing, check the connection to the garbage disposal as well.

The inlet valve may be restricted by scale or failing, or the float switch in the tub may be stuck up. Check that the float moves freely and that the supply valve under the sink is fully open. If both are fine, the inlet valve needs testing.
Check that heated dry is selected and that there's rinse aid in the dispenser. If dishes are still wet and cold at the end, the heating element or its control may have failed. Plastics often stay damp regardless.
Grit usually comes from a clogged filter or screen recirculating food particles. Remove and rinse the filter, and scrape large debris off plates before loading. If grit remains with a clean filter, check the spray arm holes for blockages.
