Smeg dishwasher repair: what to know
Smeg dishwashers follow a European design: a fine filter assembly in the tub floor, condensation drying and a 24-inch built-in or panel-ready cabinet. When one won't drain or starts leaving grit on the dishes, the filter and drain pump are the first stop, and on San Antonio's very hard water a scaled spray arm or heater often explains poor results. Panel-ready models have to be slid out of the cabinet for most repairs below the tub, so access is planned before parts are removed.

Before the visit

Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub, check that the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't plugged, and top up the rinse aid. If water is left standing, check the connection to the garbage disposal as well.

Smeg dishwashers dry mainly by condensation, so plastic items often stay damp. Rinse aid makes a large difference to how water sheets off dishes. If glassware and china are also wet, the rinse aid dispenser or the heating stage should be checked.
It changes the access. The custom door panel adds weight to the door springs, and most pump, hose and base-pan work means removing the dishwasher from the cabinet. The panel stays attached; it just has to be protected while the unit is moved.
Lift out the cylindrical filter in the tub floor, separate it from the flat mesh plate and rinse both under running water. Check the sump underneath for broken glass or seeds before reassembling. A filter that isn't seated correctly lets debris reach the pump.
Not if it's leaking onto the floor, smells of burning or trips the breaker. A dishwasher that leaves water behind or cleans poorly won't be harmed by waiting, but clean the filter first, since it's a common cause of both.
