Most Kenmore dishwashers carry a 665 prefix, meaning Whirlpool built them, and others were built by Frigidaire. Whirlpool-built Kenmore dishwashers made in the last decade usually have a filter you remove and rinse, while older ones had a self-cleaning chopper system. Drain pumps, door latches and inlet valves are the common mechanical faults, and on San Antonio's hard water, scale on spray arms and a narrowed inlet screen show up as poor cleaning and slow fills.
Worth knowing about Kenmore: Kenmore never built its own appliances; Sears sold models made by Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, GE and others, and the digits before the decimal point in a Kenmore model number name the maker. Many newer Whirlpool-built Kenmore dishwashers do: a twist-out filter in the tub floor. Rinse it every month or so. Older models used a chopper and self-cleaning filter. The model number and manual tell which you have.
Make sure the door latches firmly, because a failed latch switch stops the cycle. Then switch the power off for a minute to reset the control. If the lights still blink, the code pattern points at a specific circuit.
Grit usually means the filter needs cleaning, or food is being recirculated. Clean the filter and check the spray arms for blocked jets. Hard water can also leave a sandy film.
