KitchenAid dishwashers are known for controls hidden along the top edge of the door, a third rack on many models, and features such as ProWash cycle selection and ProDry, which uses a fan to help drying. Underneath, the pumps, inlet valve and filter system are shared with Whirlpool-family dishwashers. The hidden controls bring their own failure point: the touch panel and its cable sit where steam can reach them, and a panel that stops responding is a known fault on some older units.
Worth knowing about KitchenAid: KitchenAid is built on Whirlpool mechanicals with its own finishes and control electronics, so pumps and motors often cross over while boards and panels are KitchenAid-only. Also, on KitchenAid dishwashers with a third rack, an upper rack that comes out dirty usually points to the diverter or the supply to the upper spray arm, not the pump.

How we diagnose a KitchenAid dishwasher
Whatever the brand, on a dishwasher we check the water supply, then drainage, then the spray arms — dirty dishes come from a supply, spray-arm or filter problem much more often than from a failed pump or motor.
One dishwasher problem that often sends people to the wrong part is wet plastics and cool dishes from a condensation-drying model, which is the design working as intended on many European-style dishwashers.
Repairing a KitchenAid dishwasher instead of replacing it
KitchenAid builds for a long working life and keeps parts available for years. When one component fails on a KitchenAid dishwasher that's ten or fifteen years old, the rest of the machine often has plenty of life left, which isn't always true of an entry-level appliance at that age.
KitchenAid parts cost more and are more often special-order, so some repairs need a second visit. You'll know the wait before you agree to the repair, and the return visit is booked before we leave.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, visible when the door is open. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which KitchenAid platform you have and which parts to bring.
Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub, check that the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't plugged, and top up the rinse aid. If water is left standing, check the connection to the garbage disposal as well.

Check for a control lock first. After that, a failed touch panel or user interface board is a common cause, sometimes from moisture reaching the panel inside the door. Because the controls live in the door edge, the inner door panel comes off to replace them.
ProDry adds a fan that moves air through the tub near the end of the cycle to improve drying, along with heat on some models. If dishes suddenly come out wetter than before, check the rinse-aid level and the drying option before suspecting the fan.
Most current KitchenAid models use a two-part filter under the lower spray arm: twist out the upper cylinder, lift out the lower screen and rinse both. Older models had a self-cleaning filter with a chopper instead, which needs no routine cleaning.
Standing water can be a clogged filter, a blocked disposal inlet or a failed drain pump, and poor cleaning can be scale, a blocked arm or a weak wash pump. Testing separates the simple fixes from the part replacements.
