AGA stove repair: what to know
Many San Antonio owners call their AGA a stove, and the hotplates on top are what they use most. On a traditional heat-storage model, those hotplates are part of one heated cast-iron body, so the top and ovens rise and fall together. On controllable models, each hotplate has its own element and control. Knowing which type you have before the visit decides whether the fix is a single element or the heat source for the whole cooker.
Worth knowing about AGA: a traditional AGA cooker stores heat in a heavy cast-iron body that stays hot all the time, and troubleshooting one has little in common with a conventional oven. Also, on an AGA the parts that need attention are the burner or heating elements, the thermostat, and the door seals and hinges; the cast iron itself doesn't wear.
Common AGA stove failures
These are the failure points to check first on an AGA stove:
- Hotplate elements failing on controllable models
- Insulated lids not closing fully
- Heat source failing on traditional models
- Thermostat drifting on heat-storage cookers
- Enamel chipping on the top plate
A list like this points the diagnosis in the right direction, but one symptom can come from parts at very different prices, so the cause is confirmed at your home before you get a quote.
How we diagnose an AGA stove
Whatever the brand, on a stove we check burners and igniters first, the oven's sensor and element next, the door last — cooktop and oven fail independently, so we pin down which side is actually at fault.
One stove problem that often sends people to the wrong part is a burner that keeps clicking, which usually means a wet or dirty igniter rather than an electrical failure and often stops once the burner is properly cleaned and dried.
Built-in AGA equipment: what the visit involves
Most AGA equipment is built into cabinetry or anchored in place, so the visit starts with working out how to reach it. We allow a longer appointment and protect floors, cabinet faces and countertops before anything moves.
It changes the economics as well. Replacing a fitted AGA stove usually means cabinet or countertop work on top of the new appliance, so a failure that would retire a freestanding unit is usually still a repair here.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are behind the storage drawer, on the frame behind the oven door, or on the back. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which AGA platform you have and which parts to bring.
Work out which half has the problem, a burner or the oven. Check that burner caps are seated and the igniters are clean and dry, and note any error code on the control.
In San Antonio, keep in mind the split between gas and electric kitchens across San Antonio, which means one model family often comes in both versions with different parts.

The model name and rating plate identify it. Traditional models stay hot all the time, while controllable models let you switch hotplates and ovens on and off. Photograph the rating plate, usually behind a lower door or front panel.
Traditional AGAs store heat in cast iron, and heavy use of the hotplates or ovens drains it. Keeping lids down between uses helps. Recovery that's slower than it used to be may point at the heat source.
Small chips can be touched up with AGA's recommended enamel repair, though the color may not match perfectly. Larger damage may need the panel replaced.
Usually yes, if the fault is limited to the oven and there's no gas smell, sparking or breaker tripping. If the stove has a gas leak or an electrical fault, don't use any part of it.
