Viking oven repair: what to know
Viking wall ovens and the ovens in Viking ranges come in gas and electric versions, and the failure points differ. Gas ovens light with a hot-surface igniter that weakens over time, which shows up as long preheats or an oven that won't light at all. Electric Viking ovens depend on bake, broil and convection elements, a temperature sensor and the controls. Heavy doors mean hinges and gaskets also take wear.
Worth knowing about Viking: Viking's open burners run at high output, and spark igniters and clogged burner ports account for more Viking cooktop trouble than the electronics do. Also, Viking oven doors are heavy, and the hinges and springs carrying them wear; a door that no longer seals lets heat escape and looks like a temperature-control fault.

How we diagnose a Viking oven
Whatever the brand, on an oven we check the temperature sensor and the bake element or igniter, then the door gasket and hinges — a door that no longer shuts flat bleeds off enough heat to pass for a control problem.
One oven problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an oven its owner thinks runs cold that is actually cycling normally around a setpoint a few degrees off, something most models let you correct with a calibration setting instead of a part.
Built-in Viking equipment: what the visit involves
Most Viking equipment is built into cabinetry or anchored in place, so the visit starts with working out how to reach it. We allow a longer appointment and protect floors, cabinet faces and countertops before anything moves.
It changes the economics as well. Replacing a fitted Viking oven usually means cabinet or countertop work on top of the new appliance, so a failure that would retire a freestanding unit is usually still a repair here.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the frame behind the oven door, or behind the storage or warming drawer. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Viking platform you have and which parts to bring.
Check the breaker (electric ovens use a double breaker), make sure the control isn't in a delay, lock or Sabbath mode, and on a gas range confirm the cooktop burners still light. Note whether bake, broil or both have stopped.
In San Antonio, keep in mind Thanksgiving and holiday baking, when an oven that's barely been used all year is asked to hold temperature for hours and a weak igniter or element finally shows itself.

A weakening igniter is the common cause. It still glows, but it takes longer to reach the current that opens the gas valve, so the burner lights late or cycles slowly. The igniter is tested with a meter before it is replaced.
A grinding or squealing convection fan usually has worn motor bearings. Check that nothing is loose on the fan cover inside the oven. A failing motor can stop altogether, which leaves convection cooking uneven.
Some parts are reached from the front with the door removed. Others, such as controls or wiring behind the unit, require sliding the oven out of the cabinet, which takes two people and care with the trim.
Not if it smells of gas, sparks, heats when switched off or trips the breaker. An oven that runs a little hot or cool can be used carefully with an oven thermometer on the center rack.
