AGA oven repair: what to know
In a traditional AGA, the ovens are cavities in a cast-iron body heated by a single heat source, so each oven runs at a set temperature rather than a dial setting. Controllable models add separate elements, thermostats and controls for each oven. That difference determines the diagnosis: on a heat-storage model, low oven temperature usually traces to the burner or element that heats the whole body, while on controllable models, one oven failing points at its own element or sensor.
Worth knowing about AGA: a traditional AGA cooker stores heat in a heavy cast-iron body that stays hot all the time, and troubleshooting one has little in common with a conventional oven. Also, on an AGA the parts that need attention are the burner or heating elements, the thermostat, and the door seals and hinges; the cast iron itself doesn't wear.

How we diagnose an AGA oven
Whatever the brand, on an oven we check the temperature sensor and the bake element or igniter, then the door gasket and hinges — a door that no longer shuts flat bleeds off enough heat to pass for a control problem.
One oven problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an oven its owner thinks runs cold that is actually cycling normally around a setpoint a few degrees off, something most models let you correct with a calibration setting instead of a part.
Built-in AGA equipment: what the visit involves
Most AGA equipment is built into cabinetry or anchored in place, so the visit starts with working out how to reach it. We allow a longer appointment and protect floors, cabinet faces and countertops before anything moves.
It changes the economics as well. Replacing a fitted AGA oven usually means cabinet or countertop work on top of the new appliance, so a failure that would retire a freestanding unit is usually still a repair here.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the frame behind the oven door, or behind the storage or warming drawer. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which AGA platform you have and which parts to bring.
Check the breaker (electric ovens use a double breaker), make sure the control isn't in a delay, lock or Sabbath mode, and on a gas range confirm the cooktop burners still light. Note whether bake, broil or both have stopped.

On heat-storage models, the whole cooker's temperature depends on a single heat source and thermostat. If all ovens are cool, that source or its control is suspected. On controllable models, check each oven separately, since each has its own element.
Traditional AGA ovens are designed to run at fixed temperatures: a roasting oven, a baking oven and a simmering oven. You control cooking by choosing the oven and position. That's normal, not a fault.
Controllable electric models share familiar components like elements and thermostats. Traditional heat-storage cookers and gas-fired models need someone familiar with AGA's design. Parts are ordered through AGA's U.S. network.
