Maytag oven repair: what to know
Maytag ovens appear as wall ovens and in freestanding and slide-in ranges, gas and electric, many with convection and Power Preheat. The heat sources are Whirlpool-family parts: a glow-bar igniter on gas bake burners, hidden or exposed bake elements on electric models, and a resistance-type temperature sensor the control reads constantly. When a Maytag oven overshoots or undershoots, that sensor's resistance is tested at room temperature before the control board is suspected.
Worth knowing about Maytag: Maytag has been part of Whirlpool since 2006, so a Maytag built in the years since shares its internals and parts with Whirlpool models. Also, Maytag machines from before the Whirlpool merger are mechanically solid, but some of their parts are no longer made, so we confirm the part exists before recommending the repair.

How we diagnose a Maytag oven
Whatever the brand, on an oven we check the temperature sensor and the bake element or igniter, then the door gasket and hinges — a door that no longer shuts flat bleeds off enough heat to pass for a control problem.
One oven symptom that's easy to misread is an oven its owner thinks runs cold that is actually cycling normally around a setpoint a few degrees off, something most models let you correct with a calibration setting instead of a part.
What Maytag oven repairs usually involve
Parts for Maytag are made in volume and stocked by many suppliers. On a Maytag oven, the parts that wear out are mostly inexpensive ones: bake and broil elements, gas igniters, temperature sensors, door gaskets and hinges.
The bill changes when the fault is an electronic control board or, on a gas oven, the safety valve. On a newer unit that can still be a sensible repair; on one well into its working life, it's often the point where replacing makes more sense, and you'll hear that at the diagnosis.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the frame behind the oven door, or behind the storage or warming drawer. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Maytag platform you have and which parts to bring.
Check the breaker (electric ovens use a double breaker), make sure the control isn't in a delay, lock or Sabbath mode, and on a gas range confirm the cooktop burners still light. Note whether bake, broil or both have stopped.

Power Preheat uses more than one heat source to reach temperature sooner. If preheating is still slow, a failed element or a weak gas igniter means the oven is running on less heat than designed. A worn door gasket letting heat escape can also slow it down.
Let the oven cool completely, since the lock won't release until the cavity is below a safe temperature. If it stays locked when cool, switch the breaker off for a minute and back on. If that doesn't release it, the lock motor or its switch has likely failed.
Many Maytag electronic controls allow a small temperature offset through the settings. Check the oven with a thermometer over a few cycles first. If the error is large or changes from day to day, the sensor or the control is at fault and an offset won't fix it.
