Admiral oven repair: what to know
Admiral ovens come as part of basic freestanding ranges, mostly electric with exposed bake elements and some gas models with glow-bar igniters. The controls are minimal, which leaves the heat source, the temperature sensor and the door as the main things that can go wrong. A burned-out exposed element usually shows a blister, split or break you can see, while a weakened gas igniter can look normal and still fail to open the valve.
Worth knowing about Admiral: Admiral appliances sold in the U.S. came from Maytag and later Whirlpool, so the parts inside are Whirlpool-family parts. Also, most Admirals still running are old enough that their mechanical parts are still made but some of their electronics are not, and we check which is which before quoting.

Whatever the brand, on an oven we check the temperature sensor and the bake element or igniter, then the door gasket and hinges — a door that no longer shuts flat bleeds off enough heat to pass for a control problem.
One oven problem that often sends people to the wrong part is an oven its owner thinks runs cold that is actually cycling normally around a setpoint a few degrees off, something most models let you correct with a calibration setting instead of a part.
When an Admiral oven is worth fixing
Admiral keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Admiral doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as an electronic control board or, on a gas oven, the safety valve, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the frame behind the oven door, or behind the storage or warming drawer. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Admiral platform you have and which parts to bring.
Check the breaker (electric ovens use a double breaker), make sure the control isn't in a delay, lock or Sabbath mode, and on a gas range confirm the cooktop burners still light. Note whether bake, broil or both have stopped.

Usually. Many oven gaskets clip into holes in the oven frame and are sold as a part. A gasket that's torn, flattened or missing sections lets heat escape and makes baking uneven.
Smoke at startup usually comes from spills or grease on the oven floor or an element burning off. Clean the cavity when it's cool. Smoke with a sharp electrical smell, or visible sparking at an element, is different: switch the oven off at the breaker and have the element checked.
An oven that won't heat can have a weak igniter, a burned element, a failed sensor or a stuck relay. Measuring each one is quicker and cheaper for you than replacing parts one at a time.
