Hotpoint oven repair: what to know
Most Hotpoint ovens are part of a freestanding range, and many electric models still use an exposed bake element on the oven floor with a broil element at the top. An exposed element that fails often shows a visible blister or split, and it can arc briefly as it goes. Gas models use a hot-surface igniter, and a Hotpoint gas oven that takes much longer to light than it used to usually needs one. Temperature sensors and door hinges are the other common repairs.
Worth knowing about Hotpoint: in the U.S., Hotpoint is a GE Appliances brand, built on GE's platform with GE parts. Also, Hotpoint keeps its models deliberately basic, with fewer electronics than the GE-badged versions, so there's less to diagnose.

How we diagnose a Hotpoint oven
Whatever the brand, on an oven we check the temperature sensor and the bake element or igniter, then the door gasket and hinges — a door that no longer shuts flat bleeds off enough heat to pass for a control problem.
One oven symptom that's easy to misread is an oven its owner thinks runs cold that is actually cycling normally around a setpoint a few degrees off, something most models let you correct with a calibration setting instead of a part.
When a Hotpoint oven is worth fixing
Hotpoint keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Hotpoint doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as an electronic control board or, on a gas oven, the safety valve, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are on the frame behind the oven door, or behind the storage or warming drawer. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Hotpoint platform you have and which parts to bring.
Check the breaker (electric ovens use a double breaker), make sure the control isn't in a delay, lock or Sabbath mode, and on a gas range confirm the cooktop burners still light. Note whether bake, broil or both have stopped.

Exposed bake elements often fail by arcing at a weak spot, and you may see a blister or break in the element. Turn off the breaker before touching it. The element is replaceable, and the terminals should be checked for burning at the same time.
A brief, faint smell as the oven lights can happen, especially when the igniter is slow. A strong or lingering smell isn't normal. If it persists, turn the oven off, leave the house and call CPS Energy or your gas provider from outside.
Usually the hinges are the cause. They wear or bend over time, and the door then doesn't sit flat against the gasket. On most models hinges are replaced in pairs.
