Whirlpool makes top-load washers in both agitator and low-profile impeller styles, plus front-loaders. Recent top-loaders use a direct-drive motor with a shift actuator that switches between wash and spin, and the lid lock must confirm the lid is shut before the spin starts. When a newer Whirlpool shows a code in the F-and-E format, such as F9E1 for a long drain, the code names the condition the control detected; a failed drain pump, a blocked hose or a clogged pump filter can all trigger the same one.
Worth knowing about Whirlpool: Whirlpool's engineering also sits inside Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, Roper and JennAir models, which keeps parts easy to find across that whole family. Also, on Whirlpool's direct-drive top-loaders the drive coupler, the lid switch assembly and the drain pump are the usual wear parts, and we test those before opening the cabinet any further.

One washer problem that often sends people to the wrong part is a washer error code taken to mean a broken part when it's describing a situation: an off-balance load, a water valve only partly open, or a drain hose shoved so deep into the standpipe that it siphons.
What Whirlpool washer repairs usually involve
Parts for Whirlpool are made in volume and stocked by many suppliers. On a Whirlpool washer, the parts that wear out are mostly inexpensive ones: drain pumps, lid and door locks, inlet valves, drive couplers and belts, suspension parts and front-load door boots.
The bill changes when the fault is a main control board, a drive motor or worn tub bearings on a front-loader. On a newer unit that can still be a sensible repair; on one well into its working life, it's often the point where replacing makes more sense, and you'll hear that at the diagnosis.

F8E1 is a long-fill code: the washer didn't reach the water level it expected in time, so check that both taps are open and the hoses aren't kinked. F9E1 is a long-drain code, which usually traces to a blocked drain path, a pump problem or a kinked drain hose. The code points to the stage that failed, not a specific part.
A flashing lid-lock light usually means the washer tried to lock the lid and couldn't confirm it. Something caught under the lid, a broken strike on the lid, or a failed lid lock assembly are the usual causes. The washer won't spin until the lock reports closed.
Usually. Odor in a front-loader comes from residue held in the folds of the door boot and around the drain pump filter, and many Whirlpool front-loaders have a clean-washer cycle meant for this. Wipe out the boot and run that cycle with the recommended cleaner. A torn boot or a slow drain are the cases that need a repair.
