On many models a mode shifter changes the drive between agitate and spin. If it fails, the washer may run through the cycle without moving the clothes or spinning. The lid lock and motor are checked too, but the shifter is a common cause on these platforms.
The lid locks during the cycle and releases after the drum stops. If the washer couldn't drain, the lid stays locked with water inside. Try a drain and spin cycle; if it still won't release with the tub empty, the lock assembly may have failed.
