Amana washer repair: what to know
Amana's top-load washers are basic agitator machines with dial controls, and several long-running Amana models use Whirlpool's older direct-drive design. In that design, a rubber and plastic motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission, and it's built to break if the machine is overloaded or jammed, which protects the more expensive parts. A washer that fills and drains but won't agitate or spin often has a broken coupling.
Worth knowing about Amana: Amana models are Whirlpool engineering with plainer controls, so they carry fewer electronics that can fail and share many parts with Whirlpool. On direct-drive models, a broken motor coupling is a common cause: the motor hums or runs but nothing turns. A failed lid switch is the other usual suspect. Both are replaceable parts on a basic machine.
Many Amana agitators have a top section driven by small plastic dogs that let it ratchet in one direction. When the dogs wear, the top spins freely and clothes don't roll over as they should. The dogs come as a small kit that fits inside the agitator.
Level the machine front to back and side to side. Many Amana top-loaders have self-adjusting rear legs that settle when you tip the washer forward a few inches and set it down. Unbalanced loads and worn suspension parts also cause walking.
