Miele washer repair: what to know
Miele washers sold in the US are 24-inch front-loaders, including the W1 series, and many dose detergent automatically with TwinDos or take single-dose capsules. Many models heat their wash water internally, so the heater and its sensor matter for hot washes. The drain pump sits behind a small panel at the lower front with an accessible filter, and a clogged filter is a common reason for a drain fault. Spin is fast for the drum size, so bearings and suspension carry real load.
Worth knowing about Miele: Miele engineers for a long working life and keeps parts available for years, so a Miele in its second decade is often still a reasonable repair. Also, Miele's honeycomb drum and TwinDos automatic detergent dosing each have repair procedures of their own that differ from mainstream laundry.

How we diagnose a Miele washer

One washer symptom that's easy to misread is a washer error code taken to mean a broken part when it's describing a situation: an off-balance load, a water valve only partly open, or a drain hose shoved so deep into the standpipe that it siphons.
Repairing a Miele washer instead of replacing it
Miele builds for a long working life and keeps parts available for years. When one component fails on a Miele washer that's ten or fifteen years old, the rest of the machine often has plenty of life left, which isn't always true of an entry-level appliance at that age.
Miele parts cost more and are more often special-order, so some repairs need a second visit. You'll know the wait before you agree to the repair, and the return visit is booked before we leave.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are under the lid or around the door opening, or on the back panel. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Miele platform you have and which parts to bring.
Front-loaders have a drain filter behind a small panel at the bottom; check it for socks and coins. Make sure both water valves are fully open and the drain hose isn't pushed too far down the standpipe, and write down any error code.

Open the small panel at the lower front, drain the residual water as the manual describes, and clean the drain pump filter. Coins, hair ties and lint are the usual culprits. If the fault returns with a clean filter and an unkinked drain hose, the pump needs testing.
Check that the cartridges are seated and not empty, and that the right detergent is selected in the menu. Thick or dried detergent can clog the dosing lines, and the manual describes a cleaning procedure. If dosing still fails, the dosing pump may need repair.
Many Miele washers heat water internally instead of relying on your water heater, so a failed heater or temperature sensor leaves washes cold. Hard-water scale can shorten heater life. Testing the heater and sensor confirms which part failed.
Not if it's leaking, smells of burning or won't drain. A noisy bearing or a slow fill can usually get through a few more loads, but noise that gets worse quickly means stop before more damage is done.
