Roper washer repair: what to know
Roper top-load washers are known for keeping Whirlpool's older direct-drive design in production long after other lines changed. In that design, the motor drives a transmission through a coupling, a clutch lets the basket come up to spin speed, and a lid switch stops the spin when the lid opens. Those parts are widely stocked and well documented, which makes a Roper washer one of the easier machines to keep running. A burning-rubber smell with a slow spin often points to a worn clutch.
Worth knowing about Roper: Roper is Whirlpool's entry-level brand, with the same basic mechanics and simpler controls. Also, with few electronics on board, most Roper problems turn out to be simple parts — lid and door switches, pumps, belts, thermal fuses.

When a Roper washer is worth fixing
Roper keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.

On direct-drive Ropers, a worn clutch is a common cause: the basket can't reach full speed, so clothes come out wet, and the clutch lining leaves a smell and dust under the machine. Avoid overloading it until it's checked. If the smell is electrical or comes with smoke from the motor, stop using it.
The motor coupling between the motor and transmission is a designed weak link that breaks when the tub is overloaded or jammed. With it broken, the motor runs but nothing moves. Replacing the coupling is a routine repair on these machines.
The model number settles it, but direct-drive machines usually have a dial timer, an agitator and a pump mounted on the motor, with no drive belt. The cabinet on these models comes off from the front, which makes them quick to open for diagnosis.
Not if it's leaking, smells of burning or won't drain. A noisy bearing or a slow fill can usually get through a few more loads, but noise that gets worse quickly means stop before more damage is done.
