Whirlpool's full-size dryers share a long-running cabinet design with many Maytag, Amana and Roper models, which is why drum rollers, idler pulleys, belts and thermal fuses are common and widely stocked. On electric models, a blown thermal fuse or thermal cut-off, or an open heating element, stops the heat while the drum keeps turning. Gas models use a glow-bar igniter and gas valve coils. Many Whirlpool dryers also show a vent-restriction warning, and it deserves attention, because a clogged vent is a leading reason thermal fuses blow.
Worth knowing about Whirlpool: Whirlpool's engineering also sits inside Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, Roper and JennAir models, which keeps parts easy to find across that whole family. Also, on Whirlpool's direct-drive top-loaders the drive coupler, the lid switch assembly and the drain pump are the usual wear parts, and we test those before opening the cabinet any further.

How we diagnose a Whirlpool dryer
Whatever the brand, on a dryer we check the airflow path before any electrical part — the vent duct, the flexible connector behind the dryer and the lint path come ahead of any element or thermal fuse, since a choked vent is usually what burned out the previous one.
One dryer problem that often sends people to the wrong part is a dryer that's had its heating element changed twice while the blockage that killed the first one is still sitting in the vent, so the new element overheats and cuts out just like the old one.
What Whirlpool dryer repairs usually involve
Parts for Whirlpool are made in volume and stocked by many suppliers. On a Whirlpool dryer, the parts that wear out are mostly inexpensive ones: thermal fuses, heating elements, gas igniters and valve coils, drive belts, drum rollers, idler pulleys and door switches.
The bill changes when the fault is a control board or the drive motor. On a newer unit that can still be a sensible repair; on one well into its working life, it's often the point where replacing makes more sense, and you'll hear that at the diagnosis.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are inside the door opening or on the back panel. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Whirlpool platform you have and which parts to bring.
Clean the lint screen, then run the dryer on high and feel the airflow at the outside vent. A weak stream points to a restricted vent rather than a failed part. On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind it is open.

Usually the dryer is fine and the vent is not. The warning comes on when the dryer senses restricted airflow, so check the lint screen, the transition hose behind the machine and the outside hood, which should open strongly while the dryer runs. If the light stays on with a clear vent, a sensor fault is possible.
On electric models, the thermal fuse and thermal cut-off are tested first, then the element. On gas models, check whether the igniter glows: if it glows and no flame follows, the gas valve coils are the usual suspect. A heating fault that returns after a repair points back to the vent.
