Roper dryer repair: what to know
Roper dryers are basic Whirlpool-platform models, electric or gas, with a dial timer instead of an electronic control on most versions. The timer is a wear part itself: a small motor advances the dial through the cycle, and if it stops, the dryer can run on and on without the cycle ending. The rest is familiar Whirlpool hardware, from drum rollers and belt to thermal fuse, heating element or gas igniter.
Worth knowing about Roper: Roper is Whirlpool's entry-level brand, with the same basic mechanics and simpler controls. Also, with few electronics on board, most Roper problems turn out to be simple parts — lid and door switches, pumps, belts, thermal fuses.

How we diagnose a Roper dryer
Whatever the brand, on a dryer we check the airflow path before any electrical part — the vent duct, the flexible connector behind the dryer and the lint path come ahead of any element or thermal fuse, since a choked vent is usually what burned out the previous one.
One dryer problem that often sends people to the wrong part is a dryer that's had its heating element changed twice while the blockage that killed the first one is still sitting in the vent, so the new element overheats and cuts out just like the old one.
When a Roper dryer is worth fixing
Roper keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Roper doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as a control board or the drive motor, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.

The model and serial number are inside the door opening or on the back panel. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Roper platform you have and which parts to bring.
Clean the lint screen, then run the dryer on high and feel the airflow at the outside vent. A weak stream points to a restricted vent rather than a failed part. On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind it is open.

The timer's motor may have failed, so the dial never reaches Off. On Auto Dry, the timer only advances while the heat is cycled off, so a stuck cycling thermostat or a heat problem can also stop it moving. Testing tells which.
A hot cabinet means heat isn't leaving through the vent. Stop using the dryer, clean the lint screen, and check the vent hose and outside hood for lint or blockage. A cycling thermostat that sticks closed can also let the dryer overheat, which is a fire risk.
Only after it's converted with the manufacturer's LP conversion kit, which changes the burner orifice and valve setting. Running a natural-gas dryer on propane without conversion gives a poor, sooty flame and is a safety risk. The conversion should be done and checked by a qualified technician.
A dryer that doesn't dry can have a blocked vent, a blown fuse, a failed element or a gas-valve fault, and the fix is different for each. The vent is part of the test, because replacing a fuse on a blocked vent only buys a few loads.
