Maytag dryer repair: what to know
Current Maytag dryers are Whirlpool-platform machines, many with Commercial Technology components and an Extra Power button that boosts heat and drying time. The drive parts, thermal fuse, thermostats and gas ignition parts match Whirlpool's, so replacements are easy to source. Older Maytag-designed dryers take their own parts. On gas Maytags, a burner that lights at first and then won't relight once the dryer is warm is the classic sign of failing gas valve coils.
Worth knowing about Maytag: Maytag has been part of Whirlpool since 2006, so a Maytag built in the years since shares its internals and parts with Whirlpool models. Also, Maytag's Commercial Technology laundry models use heavier-duty components than the standard line and justify repairs further into their life.

How we diagnose a Maytag dryer
Whatever the brand, on a dryer we check the airflow path before any electrical part — the vent duct, the flexible connector behind the dryer and the lint path come ahead of any element or thermal fuse, since a choked vent is usually what burned out the previous one.
One dryer problem that often sends people to the wrong part is a dryer that's had its heating element changed twice while the blockage that killed the first one is still sitting in the vent, so the new element overheats and cuts out just like the old one.
What Maytag dryer repairs usually involve
Parts for Maytag are made in volume and stocked by many suppliers. On a Maytag dryer, the parts that wear out are mostly inexpensive ones: thermal fuses, heating elements, gas igniters and valve coils, drive belts, drum rollers, idler pulleys and door switches.
The bill changes when the fault is a control board or the drive motor. On a newer unit that can still be a sensible repair; on one well into its working life, it's often the point where replacing makes more sense, and you'll hear that at the diagnosis.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are inside the door opening or on the back panel. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which Maytag platform you have and which parts to bring.
Clean the lint screen, then run the dryer on high and feel the airflow at the outside vent. A weak stream points to a restricted vent rather than a failed part. On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind it is open.

It adjusts heat and cycle time to help heavy loads dry. It can't make up for a restricted vent: if loads only dry with Extra Power on, check the lint screen, the transition hose and the outside hood before anything else.
Auto-dry cycles end when the moisture sensor bars inside the drum report dry clothes, and fabric-softener residue on the bars can fool them. Wipe them with a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth. If cycles still end early, the sensor wiring or the control may be at fault.
That pattern points to failing gas valve coils: the burner lights, cycles off normally, and then the coils can't reopen the valve once they're warm. The igniter glows but no flame follows. The coils are usually replaced as a set.
Thermal fuses, belts, rollers and igniters are common parts, so a repair at the first visit is often possible when the part is available for your model. Control boards and less common parts may need ordering.
