Kenmore dryer repair: what to know
Kenmore dryers share platforms with the washers: 110 for Whirlpool-built, 796 for LG-built and 417 for Frigidaire-built models. Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers are common, and their weak points are well known: thermal fuses that blow when the vent is restricted, heating elements, drum rollers and idler pulleys. LG-built models add flow-sensing vent warnings. Gas versions on either platform depend on an igniter and valve coils that can fail after the dryer warms up.
Worth knowing about Kenmore: Kenmore never built its own appliances; Sears sold models made by Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, GE and others, and the digits before the decimal point in a Kenmore model number name the maker. Also, without the model number there is no way to tell whose engineering sits behind a Kenmore badge, or which parts will fit it.

How we diagnose a Kenmore dryer

One dryer symptom that's easy to misread is a dryer that's had its heating element changed twice while the blockage that killed the first one is still sitting in the vent, so the new element overheats and cuts out just like the old one.
What Kenmore dryer repairs usually involve
Parts for Kenmore are made in volume and stocked by many suppliers. On a Kenmore dryer, the parts that wear out are mostly inexpensive ones: thermal fuses, heating elements, gas igniters and valve coils, drive belts, drum rollers, idler pulleys and door switches.
The bill changes when the fault is a control board or the drive motor. On a newer unit that can still be a sensible repair; on one well into its working life, it's often the point where replacing makes more sense, and you'll hear that at the diagnosis.

Clean the lint screen, then run the dryer on high and feel the airflow at the outside vent. A weak stream points to a restricted vent rather than a failed part. On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind it is open.

On Whirlpool-built Kenmore dryers, a blown thermal fuse or broken heating element are common causes, and a restricted vent often blows the fuse. Clean the vent before replacing the fuse, or it can blow again.
Drum support rollers wear flat, and the idler pulley or belt can also wear. Replacing the rollers and idler together is common when the drum is out.
Gas valve coils that fail once warm are a common cause: the igniter glows but the valve won't reopen. A flame sensor or thermostat can also be involved.
