Auto-dry cycles use sensor bars inside the drum to measure moisture. Fabric softener residue coats them and makes them read dry too early. Wipe the bars with a little rubbing alcohol; if the problem persists, the sensor circuit is tested.
A thermal fuse or cutout opens when the dryer overheats, usually because the exhaust vent is restricted. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it will blow again. Check the outside hood for strong airflow.
A common cause on gas dryers is the gas valve coils. Once they weaken with heat, the igniter glows, the flame lights, and then the valve won't reopen for the next heating cycle. The coils are replaceable, and the flame sensor is tested at the same time.
Not if it smells of burning or gas, trips the breaker or runs very hot. A dryer that's only slow can be used briefly, but clean the lint screen every load and check that the outside vent flap opens, because slow drying usually means restricted airflow and higher temperatures.
