Admiral dryer repair: what to know
Admiral dryers are basic Whirlpool-platform models with dial controls, in electric and gas versions. Inside, the drum rides on rear rollers, a belt wraps the drum and runs over an idler pulley, and the heat circuit is protected by a thermal fuse and a high-limit thermostat, all standard Whirlpool-family parts. A squeal on startup usually comes from the idler pulley, while a rhythmic thump is more often a flat spot on a drum roller.
Worth knowing about Admiral: Admiral appliances sold in the U.S. came from Maytag and later Whirlpool, so the parts inside are Whirlpool-family parts. Also, most Admirals still running are old enough that their mechanical parts are still made but some of their electronics are not, and we check which is which before quoting.

How we diagnose an Admiral dryer
Whatever the brand, on a dryer we check the airflow path before any electrical part — the vent duct, the flexible connector behind the dryer and the lint path come ahead of any element or thermal fuse, since a choked vent is usually what burned out the previous one.
One dryer symptom that's easy to misread is a dryer that's had its heating element changed twice while the blockage that killed the first one is still sitting in the vent, so the new element overheats and cuts out just like the old one.
When an Admiral dryer is worth fixing
Admiral keeps its appliances simple and affordable, with little electronics inside, so most failures come down to a switch, pump, belt, valve or thermal fuse that is quick to find and not costly to replace.
A new Admiral doesn't cost much either, so a repair has to stay small to be worth it. If an older unit has a major failure, such as a control board or the drive motor, replacing it is usually the better use of the money.

Clean the lint screen, then run the dryer on high and feel the airflow at the outside vent. A weak stream points to a restricted vent rather than a failed part. On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind it is open.

A dry idler pulley bearing is a common cause, especially if the noise fades as the dryer runs. Worn drum rollers can also squeal. These parts are replaced from inside the cabinet, often along with the belt.
Don't use the dryer or any switches nearby. Leave the house and call CPS Energy or your gas provider from outside. A faint smell for a moment as the burner lights can be normal, but a smell that lingers needs the gas supply and valve checked before the dryer is used again.
Heat without drying usually means moist air can't get out, so check the lint screen, the hose behind the dryer and the outside vent hood. A long or crushed vent run is a common cause. Overloading the drum also slows drying.
Not if it smells of burning or gas, trips the breaker or runs very hot. A dryer that's only slow can be used briefly, but clean the lint screen every load and check that the outside vent flap opens, because slow drying usually means restricted airflow and higher temperatures.
