Current Maytag ranges are Whirlpool-built freestanding and slide-in models in gas and electric, some with convection or air fry. Gas models use sealed cooktop burners with a spark module plus a glow-bar igniter for the bake burner; electric models use radiant elements under glass and a bake element in the oven. The control thinks the lock is engaged or can't confirm its position. A power interruption during self-clean, a failed lock motor or a bad lock switch are common causes. Cutting power at the breaker for a minute sometimes resets it.
Radiant elements cycle on and off by design to hold the setting, and each has a limiter that cuts power if the glass gets too hot. Frequent cut-outs on high with a flat pan suggest a failing limiter or element. Warped or oversized pans can also trigger it.
If the cooktop works normally and there's no gas smell, burning smell or tripped breaker, it's generally fine. If the fault involves sparking, a smell or controls acting erratically, stop using the whole range until it's checked.
