AGA range repair: what to know
AGA's range line covers traditional heat-storage cookers, controllable electric models and conventional-style ranges with ordinary burners and thermostatic ovens. The conventional ranges are diagnosed much like any other range: igniters, elements, sensors and controls. Heat-storage models depend on one heat source and a thermostat. Because the range types differ so much, a photo of the rating plate is the most useful thing to have ready.
Worth knowing about AGA: a traditional AGA cooker stores heat in a heavy cast-iron body that stays hot all the time, and troubleshooting one has little in common with a conventional oven. Also, on an AGA the parts that need attention are the burner or heating elements, the thermostat, and the door seals and hinges; the cast iron itself doesn't wear.

It changes the economics as well. Replacing a fitted AGA range usually means cabinet or countertop work on top of the new appliance, so a failure that would retire a freestanding unit is usually still a repair here.
Before the visit
The model and serial number are behind the storage drawer, on the frame behind the oven door, or on the back. A photo of that label is the most useful thing you can send when you book: it tells us which AGA platform you have and which parts to bring.
Check whether the fault is on the cooktop, in the oven or both, since they're diagnosed separately. Make sure burner caps are seated and dry, and write down any error code.

Gas-fired AGA models and conventional ranges can often be converted with the correct parts, but the procedure is model-specific. It should be done by someone qualified to work on gas.
A traditional heat-storage AGA gives off heat around the clock, which adds a real load to the kitchen in summer. Some models can be turned down or off, but reheating a cold cooker takes many hours, so follow the manual's procedure. Controllable models were designed to be switched on and off more like a normal range.
